This month sees the fourth Jumpin’ With Stagger Lee held at Ernest on Boyd Street. The current incarnation of Jumpin’ started back in October 2016 after DJ / host Stagger Lee had played a few slots at the bar (and on the back of regular shows on Basic FM and Cowbell Radio), but the seeds of the night were sown long before when he was part of Randy & Earl’s Old Record Club with his ‘DJ life partner’ Jared.

Together, they notched up dozens of sets at numerous clubs, gigs and festivals (including regular Glastonbury appearances) and it was during this time that Stagger realised people will dance to anything if the music is good enough, and that while there’s a place for specialist nights, it wasn’t what he wanted to do any more. So whilst there’s a definite Jumpin’ style, genre is less of an issue.

So far, Stagger and his numerous guests DJs have played everything from stomping gospel to shitkicking country, caveman garage punk to the sweetest soul, funky rocksteady to organ-driven mod jazz and it’s just worked, wonderfully. This fourth instalment takes place on Saturday 22nd July – midway through the SummerTyne Americana weekend, where Stagger is DJing on the Jumping Hot Stage all day – so maybe expect a little more Bobbie Gentry than usual. Guest DJ this month will be Alex Johnson and as always, it’s all vinyl, all free and all good times.
