August Strindberg’s masterpiece Miss Julie was updated by Zinnie Harris and is about to be brought to life again at Live Theatre by resident director Rebecca Frecknall from Friday 3rd June until Saturday 18th June. Julie is a tale of passion, compulsion, love and hate and is all set against a backdrop of workers’ strikes and social unrest, giving the play even more relevance today than it has ever had.

The new incarnations of the characters are very contemporary and complex, with the reworking giving more strength and heart to the female roles especially, giving the play a whole new layer of substance not present in the original. It’s a piece of theatre which manages to be sexy and political all at once, with the tension drawn up between the characters utterly captivating. The background of civil unrest permeates the entire story, and all makes for a show which simply must be seen during this run at Northern Stage.

Julie is at Northern Stage, Newcastle from Friday 3rd June until Saturday 18th June.
