Reliably informed

The north east isn’t particularly well enough known for its Scandi-pop. Actually, there’s probably a geographical reason for that, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t indulge a bit in some synth-led, indie-inspired sunshine pop that’s got some ridiculously dark undertones. Perhaps this is where Joy Atlas are trying to step in, filling a void of twinkly alt pop with a light touch and something a bit thematically weighty tying it all down. Well, you could at least surmise that from their debut track Dismount anyway, which is a wonderfully crisp piece of almost minimalist electronica led by the staccato yet warm vocals of front woman Beccy Owen that would make Robyn jealous. Since unveiling the track in June, word of mouth has been spreading and now the group are about to play one of their first ever proper gigs at World Headquarters in Newcastle and are sure to tune more people in to their Scand-NE sound.

Supporting them on the night is Newcastle’s king of witch house ako, bringing his dark immersive soundscapes to WHQ, and doom-electro queen Nathalie Stern, fresh off the back of a triumphant set at Razmataz Lorry Excitement’s album launch. Lovers of electronic music would be foolish to miss it.

Joy Atlas play at World Headquarters, Newcastle on Friday 31st July.
