Devon born singer-songwriter John Smith has made a name for himself in recent years as one of the biggest folk music stars in the UK. Smith has released four albums, culminating in the massively successful 2013 release Great Lakes and touring with such names as Jools Holland and David Grey. Described by Jo Whiley as “beyond beautiful,” Smith continues to earn himself legions of new fans with the combination of a persuasive and harrowing guitar work combined with brilliantly written story-telling songs and a light husky vocal giving off an air of world-weariness well beyond his young age.

On Wednesday 18th February, Smith will be bringing his distinctly English style to Durham’s Gala Theatre for a night of compelling, self-reflective and at times harrowing folk, which is likely to garner both respectful appreciation and rapturous applause in equal measure. With able support coming in the form of the prolific and haunting Dennis Ellsworth, this promises to be an awe-inspiring night of music which will prove to be both as emotionally moving as it will entertaining.

John Smith plays at Durham’s Gala Theatre on Wednesday 18th February.
