Here’s a quick quiz question: who is the only stand-up comic to have ever won both the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best show and Best Newcomer, as well as being able to boast the title of former guide of the Houses of Parliament? Well, the title of this piece probably gives it away, really… But yes, it’s one John Kearns who owns that prestigious title and it would take longer than the space here to rattle off the rest of his achievements (but in a moderately-sized nutshell it includes sell-out residencies and more awards nominations). He’s also performed his own series on Radio 4 and acted in the likes of Top Coppers and Rotters.

So it’s fair to say that Kearns has quite a pedigree and he shows no signs of slowing down. Armed with his latest show Double Take And Fade Away (and his trademark wig and false teeth to boot), he’s headed to The Witham in Barnard Castle on Saturday 12th and Darlington’s Theatre Hullabaloo on Sunday 13th October. With this latest opus, Kearns has lost none of his idiosyncratic approach to stand-up, juxtaposing his almost buffoonish appearance with a fascinatingly sharp eye for everyday details, creating humorous yet vivid imagery. Kearns isn’t likely to fade away anytime soon; the chance to see this comedian at the top of his game shouldn’t be missed.
