Ever since Joe Gideon and his younger sister called it a day as Joe Gideon And The Shark in 2013, Gideon has been building a collection of songs which pick up nicely from that project, and sees drummer of Grinderman and The Bad Seeds Jim Sclavunos brought along for the ride. They’re taking off on tour to give these tracks an airing live and Cluny 2 hosts them on Wednesday 16th March.

The album Vice Versa pulls together songs which were initially formed just to see if Joe Gideon could play guitar again, after a wrist injury sidelined him for the best part of a year. Recorded by Rich Matthews, and finished by Gideon at home, he was ably assisted by friends Ed Harcourt (piano/organ) and Duke Garwood (horns) on a handful of tracks. The album was mixed by Head (PJ Harvey, Smoke Fairies), and collects together tracks with tales of love and madness. A new wave flavour runs throughout, with a punk influence edged, Sclavunos’ fierce drumming undercutting thoughtful and contemplative songwriting, while still retaining all the eccentricities that Gideon has become known for.

With both the project and the songs still very fresh, there’ll be a raw excitement to the live show, and with the album released this month too, there aren’t many better ways to hear the music making up their new album before taking it home.

Joe Gideon featuring Jim Sclavunos come to Cluny 2 on Wednesday 16th March.
