BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art welcomes two new exhibitions designed to explore political strategies, national culture, community and tradition, both on display from Friday 9th February until Monday 28th May.

Jasmina Cibic’s installation, This Machine Builds Nations, is to be presented to UK audiences for the first time at the Gateshead gallery. This site-specific exhibition showcases a range of media (film, sculpture and performance) to explore states’ political strategies behind the structure of national culture. Cibic intends to reveal the covert political rhetoric used to communicate certain ideas to the general public by examining European architects and how their work has reflected representation in pivotal moments of that nation’s history. Cibic’s art promises to be an interesting, multi-layered experience.

Also going on display this month is Missing Time, an audio-visual exhibition by Serena Korda exploring forgotten aspects of community and tradition in various cultures. Korda’s installation focuses on sounds, and how humans respond to noise on an almost subconscious level. She was inspired by ‘sound mirrors’, large discs designed to try to detect the noise of approaching enemy planes during World War One by picking up sound waves, and which can still be found along the North East coast. She combines these structures with a bespoke soundtrack, composed with the help of North East a capella group Mouthful, to create an immersive audio-visual art installation with strong ties to the region.

As always, BALTIC will be running a series of interesting events in conjunction with each exhibition. This Machine Builds Nations’ creator Jasmina Cibic hosts an artist talk on Friday 9th February and an interactive workshop on Statecraft And Power on Wednesday 16th May.

While on Friday 9th March, the gallery will host a live performance from Mouthful in the exhibition space, with monthly In Conversation events with the artist Serena Korda and guests taking place on Saturday 10th February, Saturday 10th March, Saturday 7th and Saturday 14th April. NARC. readers can get an exclusive 20% off tickets by using code NARC20 when booking online.
