Tyneside Cinema’s Eurothrillers season continues with this gripping piece of Icelandic noir, from celebrated director Baltasar Kormakur, returning to chill audiences on Sunday 1st February.

The 2006 police procedural follows the plight of a worn out detective and his squad. Bizarre similarities begin to crop up between a contemporary homicide he is investigating and a notorious unresolved crime from 30+ years previously in 1974. At the same time, an employee at a local DNA-mapping lab is reeling from the death of his daughter from a brain tumour. Over time, the two men’s lives become intricately linked and a bleak trail of long buried secrets begins to get uncovered.

This taut who-dunnit is a brilliant example of the edge-of-your-seat crime fiction the Scandinavians have excelled in over the past few years (see also the Wallander detective series, Stieg Larsson’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, et al). At the time of release, Jar City was lauded for its sublime direction and combination of family drama and fascinating insight into Icelandic culture. That it stands out at all, is testament to its high-quality in the ever-competitive (and seemingly never-ending) sub-genre.

Wrap up warm… this Icelandic thriller promises to chill you to the core.

Jar City screens at the Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 1st February.
