Reliably informed

I happened to be about fourteen when the emo epidemic of the mid 2000s took off. That meant that if you went to statistically the second roughest and least academically successful comprehensive school in Sunderland (like I did, true story) then you were in one of two camps: the floppy-haired emo brigade or the tracksuit-in-socks-wearing chav troupe. I don’t think I have to say which of the camps I decided I to try and be a part of. It’s for this reason that any form of emo music holds a weirdly special place in my heart (I am not ashamed to say that I saw and enjoyed My Chemical Romance supporting Muse on their Black Holes & Revelations tour. Twice). But acoustic emo? Go on then.

Beyond the Wall are bringing fellow Sunderland native and acoustic-emo singer-songwriter James Carroll is returning to the region from his spiritual home in Leeds to perform some of his typically melancholic and beautifully heartfelt tunes (that happen to contain a lovely little slab of prog intricacy for good measure). In the past two years Carroll has been a prolific releaser of his own music, launching four EPs and albums, and he’s currently gearing up to unleash his latest LP, a collaboration with fellow tour member, Irish alt rockers Anna’s Anchor. AA take inspiration from Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins and Brand New to create a beguiling juxtaposition of brash rock melodies with brutally honest yet tender lyrics. Their split album Crossing Channels is released tomorrow, meaning that there’s plenty of time to indulge in its beauty before the pair perform at the Dog and Parrot.

Also appearing on the bill is Newcastle-based rising alt folk star Kiki Lowe, aka Keiandra. Thanks to her beautifully sultry vocals and a style similar to Lucy Rose and Marika Hackman, Lowe has earned a prestigious place playing at this year’s Evolution Emerging and definitely deserves the often overused title of One to Watch.

James Carroll, Anna’s Anchor and Keiandra all play at the Dog and Parrot, Newcastle on Saturday 4th March.
