Reliably informed

It could be argued that the best comedians are the ones that don’t have to try very hard to get a laugh. That can definitely be said for James Acaster – in fact, Kettering’s most eccentric stand-up is an expert at being, well, a bit whimsical in his delivery.

Lanky, geeky and unquestionably odd, he resembles a first-year Geography student who has sacked off Freshers to stay in and watch repeats of Star Trek. With his expressionless stare, the ex-drummer of bands such as The Wow! Scenario (nah, me neither) has bagged awards for his various Edinburgh fringe shows, constantly perfecting his silly-yet-intelligent brand of observational humour.

Like many of the current generation of comics, Acaster has stumbled upon fame by featuring on TV shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Mock The Week, sending co-panellists into fits of laughter with his analyses of cheese graters and ‘ear sucking ability’.

The man who once declared his comedy hero to be The Rock is now on tour with his latest show The Trelogy: Recognise/Represent/Reset, which is a trilogy of material from the last three years, which he will be performing across three consecutive nights at The Stand in Newcastle from Sunday 7th until Tuesday 9th of May. It’s an unusual concept, but then Acaster is an unusual guy: be sure to expect a high dosage of daft, a whiff of awkwardness and a whole host of anecdotes concerning the gripes of a man who still ‘doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life’.
