Lovers of unusual, quirky, irresistible art are in for a treat this Valentine’s week. The gallery at House of Blah Blah is kick-starting its 2015 programme with an exhibition from multi-platform practitioner Jade Montserrat, whose work will be showing at the venue until 5th March, launching with a preview event on Thursday 12th February.

Blah Blah is one of Teesside’s hottest new cultural venues. Situated in a Grade-II listed former Post Office in Middlesbrough’s Victorian Quarter, it opened July last year, with an ethos of showcasing the most exciting contemporary artists. They host artist studios, a music venue/warehouse and a photography studio; in other words, it’s a wonderfully impossible venue to pigeonhole.

Jade, a Scarborough-based Jack-of-all-trades has been on their wish list from the start. She uses a range of techniques, from performance, film and installation to sculpture, print and text: a similarly difficult figure to designate a label to, then. For the launch, she will be accompanied by a posse of art students from Teesside University, taking over for the night with an exhibition, DJs and live music.

Jade’s work endearingly repurposes materials to expose gaps in their visual and linguistic interpretations. A difficult artist to get your head around but an easy one to fall in love with.
