Girl Power, #MeToo, #TimesUp, International Women’s Day. The world is a fairly different place for women today compared to 50 years ago, but has there been as much progression in the world of live music? As a female musician and gig promoter, I sometimes wonder and despair at the representation and experiences of women in music today.

Arriving at Live Theatre, Newcastle from Tuesday 13th-Thursday 15th November, original musical It’s Different For Girls reveals the trials and tribulations of being a woman in the music scene. The play follows fictional 60s teen band, Sindy & the Girlfriends, as they rise up the ranks from local pub gigs to performing for US troops in Germany. Reality bites for the band when they end up being judged more on the length of their skirts rather than the quality of their music, and have to face the dangers of being a vulnerable woman in the unpredictable world of rock ‘n’ roll.

Taking inspiration from Hull’s own real-life 60’s girl band Mandy & The Girlfriends, audiences can expect catchy tunes, go-go boots and beehives aplenty. It’s certainly one to enjoy whilst appreciating and paying tribute to those trailblazing female musicians from the 60’s without whom Girl Power probably would never have happened.
