The jazz revival is well and truly underway, with a wave of fantastic contemporary acts bringing joy to our ears. One of those leading the charge is Pete Cunningham, best known as dextrous saxophonist Ishmael and leader of the namesake Ishmael Ensemble. This year he released his extraordinary debut album, A State Of Flow, received support from the likes of  Caribou, Gilles Peterson & Mary Anne Hobbs and recorded a Maida Vale session as part of BBC Radio 6 Music’s UK Jazz Special, which saw them win ‘session of the year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards.

The Ishmael Ensemble will be performing at Cobalt, Newcastle on Friday 22nd November and bringing with them a sound that touches on various styles of jazz, stirring ambient invocations, club-ready percussive workouts, spiralling grooves & hazy psychedelic electronica. It’ll be an exciting live spectacle that will restore or reaffirm your love for those sweet saxophone sounds.
