After winning the People’s Play Award in 2016, Newcastle-based writer Alison Carr’s debut play Iris, produced at Live Theatre, received critical acclaim and four stars in The Guardian.

Quirky and witty, Iris tells the story of two estranged sisters as they come to terms with the loss of their domineering mother, who still controls their lives from beyond the grave. The show returns to the North East from Tuesday 10th-Saturday 14th September, this time at The People’s Theatre in Heaton, a non-professional theatre company which discovers and nurtures new writing, acting and directing talents in the region before they embark on their professional careers.

Iris features performances by Emma Weetch, Sarah Mulgrew and is directed by Sarah Davison, who takes on her first solo direct after her role as Assistant Director on King Lear, Richard III and The Tempest. Loving the richness of Carr’s writing and the Northern humour, Davison found the play a treat to work on: “It’s brilliant material, with lyricism and sorrow and a huge heart at the centre,” she says. Distinctly Northern and down to earth, Iris promises dark humour aplenty.

Iris is at The People’s Theatre, Newcastle from Tuesday 10th-Saturday 14th September
