Reliably informed

When it comes to comedy, if you don’t have any good jokes, you’re screwed. It’s hard to write good ones and even harder to think them up on the spot. Improvisation is probably the hardest to pull-off – there’s no scraps of paper or inked notes on your hand to take cues from, all you’ve got is your lightning quick wit and a working, moving body.

If you’re anything like me, you’re deluded and think you’re funnier than you actually are – luckily, The Stand are giving beginners and people of a more advance level who already have it half nailed, a brilliant opportunity to develop their improvisation skills. The Stand’s arts-ed company, The Improvisation Foundation, will deliver training through a host of monthly workshops starting on Saturday 30th January. Led by Bev Fox and Ian McLaughlin of acclaimed North East improv troupe The Suggestibles, the course will teach beginners how to hone in on their spontaneous selves, picking up some invaluable performance experience along the way.

The program summary says to come ‘wearing an open attitude and easy to move in clothes’, so presumably you’re going to be getting down and dirty with the rest of the budding comedians. There’s an added bonus to all of this, with 2 for 1 tickets to The Suggestibles Thursday show at The Stand, to see how the pros do it.
