Last month we told you about the Violets season of events which aim to shine a light on female musicians and performers at Cobalt Studios in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley, and this month we’re following up with some details about a couple of the main events. Friday 2nd March has an intriguing bill for the beatheads: Ikonika and Nabihah Iqbal. Hyperdub artist Ikonika has been producing forward-thinking, dubstep-infused bass sounds for over a decade, while Iqbal’s recent Weighing Of The Heart album on Ninja Tune is a gorgeous dreamy dance pop collection.

Even more exciting is the event hosted on Saturday 3rd March by Newcastle’s art party collective Candy Vortex, who always deliver synapse-frazzling visuals and sounds. Appearing on the night are three unique and wonderful  acts: Lone Taxidermist caused all manner of delight and shock on the festival scene last year with a live show that includes all manner of sploshing, cake-sitting and electro-art-noise fuelled insanity – there’s genuinely nothing like a Lone Taxidermist show. Also appearing are Manchester’s truly wonderful Ill, who blend wonky electro pop with unhinged noise and deeply political content. Their debut album is due on Newcastle’s Box Records in May and it’s a thing of wonder. Finally, there’s Charismatic Megafauna, a brilliantly raucous proposition who blend performance art, poetry and post-punk to stunning effect.
