The upcoming Great Exhibition of the North will celebrate the North East’s heritage, history, and identity and, as part of this three month event, Gateshead’s BALTIC will be hosting an array of installations in keeping with this theme.

Opening from Friday 11th May (and running until Sunday 30th September) is Idea of North, which takes over the vast Level 4 gallery and will play host to a variety of artists working in many different mediums, all coming together to reveal different voices within the Northern identity.

Amber collective founder Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen curates Women by Women, a photography installation which explores the representation of women and girls in North East media by female photographers since the 1970s. In addition, David Blandy and Larry Achiampong feature their immersive film, combining footage of Hadrian’s Wall with computer graphics to create their own fantastical narrative. Meanwhile, in Real Arcadia, Matt Stokes explores the Cumbrian ‘cave rave scene’ of the 1990s, while Chris Killip’s photography reveals Gateshead’s 1980s’ underground music scene.

Through multimedia and multiple perspectives, the variety of consciousness and ideas found within the Northern identity are brought to the forefront of the audience’s attention. Such an immersive and diverse display of perspectives is the best way to commemorate everything which makes up the region.
