For the uninitiated, Hurray For The Riff Raff are a New Orleans-based group playing quintessential Americana, folk and blues. Puerto Rican lead singer Alynda Segarra has a voice that’s soft and melodic, with an impressive range. Raised in the Bronx, Segarra’s love of doo-wop and Motown contributes to her expressive singing style, wrapping itself around songs that draw from the American South.
Their latest album, 2014’s Small Town Heroes, produces a sound that is at once a portrayal of the diversity of the American South, but which contains subtle hints of other stylistic and international folk influences. The result is a sound that seems like it should be played on a Victrola in a grand New Orleans house while the inhabitants sip cold lemonade from intricate glasses.
The duo’s gig on Thursday 19th January at The Cluny is a must for anyone that wishes to luxuriate in some old world Americana.
