The Unthanks made their dream of curating their own festival on Tyneside a reality with the first Home Gathering event back in 2015 at the Boiler Shop. Last year, despite a last minute change of venue to Hoult’s Yard, the second festival was bigger and better and this month they’re back at Hoult’s Yard again for a three-day event from Friday 15th until Sunday 17th September, that is as eclectic and singular as ever. For Unthanks fans, the biggest draw is probably a one-off performance of their breakthrough album The Bairns, marking its tenth anniversary with a reformed Winterset (including pianist Stef Conner), but there’s a lot more besides to be found across the two venues.

The Blockheads have their own anniversary to acknowledge with the fortieth anniversary of New Boots & Panties, whilst Joan As Police Woman is making a rare solo appearance. Other big hitters include Neville Staple, Beth Orton and Dutch Uncles, and there’s comedy from by Graham Fellows (appearing as himself rather than John Shuttleworth) and Henry Normal. There’s a host of folk artists from Ireland to Australia, the Orkneys to Wales, and a smattering of local talent too – including an appearance from rockabilly revivalists Sir Jac’s Bantamacs and folk act The Keelers (including Rachel and Becky’s dad George) – alongside a packed bill of crafts, kids activities, flashmobs and more.

Home Gathering takes place at Hoult’s Yard, Newcastle from Friday 15th until Sunday 17th September.
