Now that Newcastle’s landscape has become a heady mix of contemporary glass-based architecture and traditional Georgian and Victorian buildings, it’s sometimes hard to believe that less than a century ago the city was severely bombed by German fighters. It’s a tale that the Ouseburn Trust and Twenty Seven Productions are keen to tell in a unique fashion, getting away from the pitfalls of stale history lessons and bringing their production Hitler’s Headquarters to the Victoria Tunnel.

Hitler’s Headquarters will be taking a look at real life in Newcastle during the bombings, telling the stories of families who were made homeless and forced to take shelter beneath the city during the worst of the conflict in 1941. It takes the audience back in time, bringing them through the Victoria Tunnel air raid shelter on a promenade performance, with the characters becoming guides as the story unfolds. Victoria Gibson of Twenty Seven Productions said: “It’s nothing like the average play in a regular theatre as the audience will actually feel part of the whole experience- and get to see the magnificent Victoria Tunnel.”

If you ever wanted to know what it was like for those who became victims of the bombings during the Second World War, Hitler’s Headquarters is about as close to the experience as you’d ever hope to get.

Hitler’s Headquarters comes to the Victoria Tunnel in Newcastle from Monday 28th September until Sunday 11th October.
