A Northern Stage and Curious Monkey co-production, HERE is about finding sanctuary in the unlikeliest of places. Taking place from from Thursday 19th-Saturday 28th March, HERE is part of The Arriving Project, Curious Monkey’s ongoing work with people seeking sanctuary in the North East and Derby. This powerful new play sweeps across four seasons, with four people from four corners of the world.

Directed by Amy Golding and written by Lindsay Rodden with composer/sound designer Niroshini Thambar, HERE explores the story of two best friends with a library card, and the power they summon through friendship and books to make something magical. Discovering the joy of dancing on rooftops and blossom in winter, they search to find a way to express ‘WE WERE HERE’. They haven’t found the ending to their tale yet, but they know it will have to be something extraordinary.

The cast includes actors with refugee backgrounds; Arieta Visoka came to the UK aged two from Kosovo, and HERE will be her professional debut; Joana Geronimo, originally from Angola, now lives in Newcastle. The characters converge on this strange city that folds and unfolds around them, like a maze of paper. It’s a story that opens up like a book to get lost in, as they re-write the story of the city as their own.

There’s a teenage girl’s message in the sky. Can you see it? Will it change your perception at all?
