The second half of this year is packed with exciting new releases, and none more so than 2020; another staggering creation from Newcastle’s foremost maverick genius Richard Dawson. The snag, unfortunately, is another hiatus for Dawson’s side outfit Hen Ogledd – though not before one final show to round out the cycle kickstarted by November’s delightful third album, Mogic.

Pitching Dawson alongside the diverse talents of Dawn Bothwell, Sally Pilkington and Rhodri Davies, the group headline Cobalt Studios on Saturday 7th September, offering a final opportunity (for a good while, at least) to sample said record’s gems; from the hook-laden Problem Child and blissful psychedelics of Sky Burial to the marvellous experimental oddity Tiny Witch Hunter. As though further bait were required, their first North East show in 10 months also offers a pair of A-grade supports in Bad Amputee and Me Lost Me.

One of the region’s finest newcomers, Bad Amputee’s sparse, absorbing slowcore is a thing of harmonised lo-fi wonder, all helmed by the distinctive earthy vocal of local folk luminary Phil Tyler. Me Lost Me, meanwhile, is a name readers of these pages must by now be familiar with. Initiated or otherwise, Jayne Dent’s riveting electronic folk is an utterly essential live experience, with recent shows seeing her premiere a slew of truly remarkable set additions. Not to be missed!
