Melodic, intelligent and spiky indie is something that isn’t in short supply in Durham at the minute. With DIY heroes Martha recently vying for a spot on BBC 6 Music’s Rebel Playlist, the county and the town have been put firmly on the map. Enter indie-rock quintet Hazels, carrying on the tradition of great Durham indie bands being named after middle-aged women with perms. They’re popping down the road to play at Think Tank in Newcastle on Saturday 7th February and they’re bound to be bringing some seriously spiky vibes.

Bringing to mind the slightly ramshackle yet lovely melodic DIY indie of The Libertines, the band have gained a huge following in the region thanks to their superbly energetic demos and their most recent single, In Control. If you thought agit-pop was dead, you ain’t heard nothing yet. Supporting them on the night are Brit rockers The Castells and a special acoustic set from Motion Tourist frontman Michael Bennett.

Hazels play Newcastle’s Think Tank on Saturday 7th February.
