Reliably informed

As any musician will tell you, getting noticed in the big bad music world is challenging enough; social media rules are being rewritten by the week and the DIY approach is not only de rigeur but often the only option. Leeds-based songwriter Hannah Trigwell paid her dues as a busker, self-released three EPs and then went on to found her own indie label, TeaPot Records. YouTube played an important part in her career, with videos of her carefully chosen cover versions regularly gaining millions of views, which lead to a Best Unsigned Act award and dance remixes.

With her original material she’s morphed into a pop whirlwind, complete with slick production and moody videos, but her talent remains undiminished by such frippery; cutting through the marketing bullshit, Hannah’s innate way with a pop melody and an angelic voice was always bound to set her on the path to stardom. Tracks like Filthy Rich’s message of ‘poor but happy’ is a well-worn one, but Hannah’s beguiling voice lifts the simple track to a hopeful paean to lasting love, while Another Beautiful Mistake is a chart-bothering pop masterpiece that you’ll be humming for days.

Given the trajectory of Hannah’s career so far, it’s likely she’ll outgrow small venues like Tynemouth Surf Café, where she performs on Thursday 19th October, pretty darn soon.
