Reliably informed

With the exception of some brief reunions, the last decade has seen Super Furry Animals on an extended hiatus. Across that span though, frontman Gruff Rhys has released a string of solo records. After drawing inspiration from a discovery that he was a descendant of John Evans – a Welsh explorer in the 1790s – on 2014’s American Interior, last year, he released Babelsburg, a strikingly symphonic portrait of the contemporary United States.

Hot on its heels, September saw him release Pang!. Ever the adventurer into new sound territory, Pang! is not only a Welsh-language album (with a tiny bit of Zulu in the mix for good measure) but is also mixed by South African electronic artist Muzi, creating a lilting, sometimes psychedelic and often surprising blend of styles and moods.

Performing at Sage Gateshead on Tuesday 15th October, the Welsh wonder will no doubt showcase his breadth of talents, spanning his most recent endeavours and mining his extensive back catalogue. It’ll likely all be delivered in his charming style (probably with a few homemade signs too), and will provide a chance to soak in Rhys’ constantly evolving, and always engaging, sound.
