This past year or so, I’ve noticed loads of pianos kicking around. I’ve seen them in pubs, venues, leisure centres, train stations, schools, furniture shops, absolutely everywhere. The problem is, as nice as they are as decorative pieces of furniture, I’m not hearing many people play them well, or at all. I would love to see the central element of many a great musical composition take centre stage and wow/inspire those who have become used to them being a background item.

Thankfully, the Great Northern Piano Session returns to Gosforth Civic Theatre for its third instalment on Thursday 26th September and makes the piano great again. Brought to us as part of The Atmospherica Composer Concert Series, the event is not your everyday common or garden classical piano concert, it’s an exciting and varied line up with a little something for everyone.

It will feature live piano accompaniment to a stunning video art installation from a collaboration between Frankfurt-based composer Garreth Broke and artist Anna Salzmann entitled ‘Healing’. The pieces are a musical response to 11 abstract art pieces by Salzmann that are tender, melancholy and ultimately redemptive.

Fresh from shows at Latitude festival are critically acclaimed Suffolk based duo Pianofield, who make modern classical electronic music from the piano and found sound that exploring the connection between the environment and the human.

Atmospherica founder and award-winning composer Steve Luck, completes the line-up performing pieces from his latest album ‘Collected Piano Solos – Volume 1 that has been described as ‘uplifting, joyous and life-affirming’.

The concert will take place at 7.30pm at Tickets are priced at £10.
