British artist Graeme Durant makes sculptures, paintings, drawings and installations. For the forthcoming BALTIC exhibition, taking place at the Gateshead gallery from Friday 5th December until Sunday 22nd February, he has created a new body of work made in response to the level two gallery space.

Like a ship in a storm, the exhibition being the ship and Mr Durant being the storm, the body of work entitled When In Roam is exuberant and comical. Utilising a vast array of colour and using everyday objects including rugs, tennis balls, louver blinds, candles and recycling, improvisation and low-tech construction he gives the objects new life, colour and imagination with diverse references from fiction, reality, art history, literature and architecture. Quoting surrealism and Dada with contradicting wit, the artist is attentive to the formal properties and language of his materials

The tile references Roman architecture in Durant’s work and plundering the cultural landscape while roaming for material. The artist’s smiley mouthed gherkin, frowning eyebrow and hand signal paintings are throughout the exhibition: a polite cat, a lucky maneki-neko are some of the friendly faces you will encounter on your travels throughout the exhibition.

Graeme Durant’s When In Roam comes to Gateshead’s BALTIC on Friday 5th December until Sunday 22nd February.
