Taking in five UK cities, a new tour and a huge chance to see a new interpretation of J.S. Bach’s iconic masterpiece is underway, with the Newcastle leg taking place at Dance City Friday 20th November and Saturday 21st November.

The tour has seen Glasgow-based string orchestra Scottish Ensemble team up with Andersson Dance, a contemporary dance company based in Stockholm.

Having been incredibly well-received in Stockholm in September, critics have also lavished the show with praise, and audiences have been just as giving, with standing ovations in reaction to the performance. Five dancers and eleven musicians make up the lineup, and they work in unison as one single entity, perfectly choreographed together.

Bach’s Goldberg Variations was first published in 1741, and remains a hugely celebrated piece, so this is a rare opportunity for it to be showcased in such an original way. It’s an ambitious performance, a string ensemble performing standing up, movement at the heart of their pairing with the dance company, the idea seemed very simple to Artistic Directors of both companies, Jonathan Morton and Orjan Andersson, but bringing this piece to life has taken a lot of work.

The pair knew immediately that they wanted to take it a step further: rather than have musicians only
performing the music, they took the ambitious decision to choreograph musicians and dancers as one, and the ambition certainly seems to have paid off.
