Reliably informed

Godspeed You! Black Emperor are one of those bands you simply have to witness live to fully appreciate their power. The first time I saw GY!BE, I had what I now fondly refer to as a ‘Godspeed moment’. One of those moments where you turn to the person next to you, and silently mouth “shiiiiit!” as the sweet musical vibrations wash over your body. If you haven’t experienced that moment before, lovely reader, then you now have the chance to, as the troupe of Canadian post-rockers return to the UK for the first time in three years, playing Sage Gateshead on Saturday 24th October.

Staggeringly, it’s been 18 years since the band released their first LP, and though they disappeared on a lengthy hiatus back in 2003, such was the enigma surrounding GY!BE that they’ve always maintained a cult following. Since returning with the sublime Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (which bagged them the prestigious Polaris Music Prize) in 2012, the band have remained, (though still somewhat elusively) on the scene, releasing their fifth full-length Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress in March. Already a dead cert to appear in ‘albums of the year’ lists, Asunder… sees the instrumentalists at the peak of their powers; a record that will evoke feelings you’ve never felt before. One piece of advice: make sure you bring your earplugs.
