A celebration of all things heavy, raw and noisy, GNAW Fest returns to Newcastle’s Cluny 2 on Friday 10th November for its seventh year. Standing for Great Northern Amp Worship, organisers describe what’s in store as “the most animal-zeitgeist event you’re likely to attend all year”. As if the chance to discover what exactly they mean by ‘animal-zeitgeist’ wasn’t enough (we may safely assume that it has nothing to do with Suede), the line-up looks like a corker.

The bill is suitably chock full of eardrum punishing sounds; attendees can enjoy sets from Suffolk’s sludge/stoner power trio Old Man Lizard, who bring their riff-heavy and melodic instrumentals to Newcastle, while London’s stomping and mournful Elephant Tree provide stoner metal which sounds like Billy Corgan having a fight with James Hetfield in slow motion. GNAW veterans Cattle return, promising a surprise because their sound has apparently “evolved incredibly” since last time they were here; while locals Waheela return with their Japanese-influenced noise, improvised and utterly unrelenting with crashing guitars, drums and shrieking vocals. Completing the line-up are the brilliantly named Hot Sex For Boys, a “new band with some familiar faces” who bring their infusion of garage rock and hardcore punk to the party.
