Ever heard of Vaporwave? It’s a relatively new phenomenon in music and art that combines indie dance genres such as bounce house, witch house and chillwave with often anti-consumerist messages. It’s also pretty damn flashy, so it’s no real surprise that a neon wonderland of interactive light installations has been inspired by the movement. Across two days at Science Central’s flagship building The Core, students and graduates from Newcastle and Northumbria University are teaming up with professionals and electronic design firms to create innovative and exciting works of interactive art in Glitch-Athon.

Glitch-Athon is just the latest in The Core’s engagement with the cultural sector in the region, which has already seen a variety of creative projects open to the public, including EAT! Festival’s Future City, Future Chef and Dominic Wilcox’s mini-Cathedral installation. Glitch-Athon is one of the centre’s most ambitious works, producing unexpected and imaginative art through the power of light to dazzle anyone with an interest in the visual arts, programming and other creative and technological fields. Don’t forget your sunglasses.

Glitch-Athon takes place at The Core, Newcastle on Tuesday 2nd June.
