French director Celine Sciamma is no stranger to expertly-judged dramas of adolescence, having previously directed the stunning Tomboy. She’s now back with Girlhood, another tale driven by exquisite performances and super-stylish cinematography.

Newcomer Karidja Toure stars as Marieme, a teenager dragged into the world of girl gangs in the suburbs of Paris (and while that might sound leafy, the suburbs of Paris are nowhere near as cosy as our own quaint semi-detached havens). The film drags you through Marieme’s trials and tribulations as she makes choices that will affect her, not just in the short term, but also for the rest of her life. She changes her name, her style, drops out of school and starts stealing; it’s a tantalising look at what it’s like to be a young woman in modern France today, all set to a stunning, fizzing electro-pop soundtrack. If you think the coming of age drama might be dead, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Girlhood comes to Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle from Friday 15th May.
