James Brown is undoubtedly one of the most iconic figure in funk and soul. His powerful singing voice, irresistibly catchy jams and irrepressible personality (both on and off stage), Brown is still one of the most recognisable figures in popular music. It was only a matter of time before a biopic was made of the Godfather of Soul. Enter Get On Up, which screens at Stockton’s ARC from Tuesday 6th January.

The film stars Chadwick Boseman as the great man himself, part of a stellar ensemble cast that also includes Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. Told in a series of flashbacks – starting in 1993 and travelling as far back as Brown’s teenage years – the film examines the major events of Brown’s life, both musically and personally. It’s an enjoyably insightful flick both for fans of Brown and newcomers to his life and times, who will no doubt leave the cinema with a much greater knowledge of the singer.

Get On Up runs at ARC, Stockton from Tuesday 6th January until Thursday 8th January.
