On Friday 11th October Newcastle Castle screens a film about one of the city’s more renowned cultural figures of recent times. Geordie Jazz Man is a celebration of Keith Crombie, proprietor of the legendary Jazz Café and a mysterious figure who marched to his own beat and left a remarkable musical legacy. The venue was an iconic dive, the pride of the Newcastle Jazz and live music scene and a home away from home for travelling known musicians and generations of Geordie misfits. His circle of friends included internationally renowned musicians and thespians and when Keith sadly died, his funeral was attended by hundreds of people, and the procession stopped traffic across the city.

Abi Lewis, Keith’s Goddaughter started work on the documentary before his passing and finished it in 2016 before taking the film to music festivals around the world, where it won the 2017 Jury Prize for ‘best international’ at NorthWestFest, ‘best director of photography’ at Solo Positivo Film Festival and most recently ‘best documentary non-factual’ at the Royal Television Society Awards. She’s now ready to tell Keith’s story to the people of his home city via this special screening, which will also feature a Q&A with Abi and special guests, with live music from Gypsy Dave Smith and more.
