Reliably informed

Vanquished from its spiritual home at The Northumberland Arms by pulled pork and salted caramel flavoured gin in teapots, Newcastle’s doom metal scene has been wandering Tyneside like a miserable, black-clad vagabond; pitching its gloomy tent in a variety of venues. This month’s campsite is Gateshead’s Central Bar, as Inverted Grim-Mill alumni Geomancer make the journey north to grace us with their bowel-busting presence on Friday 26th May.

With a noisey groove so thick that it has no earthly business coming from a three-piece beat combo, Geomancer are a sludgey, head-bobbing stoner’s dream come true. With only a demo released in 2015 to their name, it could be churlishly said that their recorded activity is as glacially slow as their riffs but at the end of the day, as you watch the sunset and see dusk creep in over the High Level Bridge, this kind of mystery is nothing if not endearing.

Main support on the night comes from post-metal behemoths Archelon: with a number of releases under their belt and favourable comparisons with such luminaries as Isis and Russian Circles, this is one hunk of Sheffield steel you’d be mad to miss. Also on the bill are Newcastle’s instrumental post-rock upstarts Eigengrau, bringing some lighter shades to the proceedings.

Geomancer play Central Bar, Gateshead on Friday 26th May.
