Giggle Beats have searched far and wide for the best north east comedy has to offer but now they’ve finally revealed their line up for the next instalment of Jesting About. The project, which promotes home-grown talent, will showcase a total of 20 comedians across two nights at the Live Theatre in Newcastle. It’s not all just your usual brand of stand-up though; there’s also music, poetry and sketch comedy on offer, and all the performances are set to be recorded for a six-part series to be broadcast on BBC Newcastle from June.

On Sunday 12th April, Sammy Dobson, Barry Fox, Lewis Gray, Mark Kennedy, Rahul Kohli, PiPE RiOT, Katherine Tanney, Funny Team, Kate Yossarian, Alfie Joey and Cal Halbert will all be recorded. Meanwhile, on Monday 13th April, it’s the turn of Hal Branson, David Callaghan, Alexander Jackson, Julian Lee, Nicola Mantalios-Lovett, Rowan McCabe, Catherine Scott, John Whale and Nat Wicks to have their live performances taped and ready to be broadcast.

Established acts such as Ross Noble, Jason Cook and Chris Ramsey are also lending a hand, while sketch groups Hot Gulp and Silly Billies are providing some pre-recorded sketches for the series. On top of that, the one and only Vic and Bob have donated their unique talents to recording a series of idents for BBC Newcastle (we can only say oovavu to that).

Producer Steve Drayton commented on the fact that this year’s Jesting About is going some way to helping the representation of women in the comedy world: “For years women have been under represented in the world of comedy – with Jesting About we’ve discovered six women comedians so hopefully we’re getting some balance along the way.” He also commented on the ability of Jesting About to break new talent from the region: “The great thing about Jesting About is seeing a performer for the first time and knowing that they’d work well on the radio. There are some brilliant comedians out there, and hopefully giving them a platform on BBC Newcastle will give them a step up the showbiz ladder.”

With such an array of new and established talent on show, Jesting About 3 will help to cement the region’s place as a hub of comedic activity, while providing a barrage of belly laughs along the way.

Jesting About 3 takes place at Newcastle’s Live Theatre on Sunday 12th and Monday 13th April. Tickets are free on a first-come first-served basis and are available via the Live Theatre.
