August is a busy month for comedy, but it’s not necessary to travel up the A1 to get your fill. The good ol’ Edinburgh Fringe preview show is where comics test their ticklers on a Northern audience before heading over the border, and The Stand in Newcastle will play host to a generous handful of double bills throughout June and July, offering the opportunity of getting your funny bone tickled right on your doorstep.

Locals John Scott and Gavin Webster kick things off on Tuesday 9th with their work in progress shows. John Scott’s Dissent show is doubtless full of satirical meanderings, while Gavin’s The Sexist’s Sexist sees the comic gifting himself several over-indulgent awards over the course of an hour. They’re also joined by local chortler Seymour Mace, performing his Niche As Fuck! show, which you can also see alongside Silky’s entertainingly titled The Shrieking In My Mind preview on Tuesday 16th.

Social taboos are tackled on Sunday 14th thanks to Ria Lina’s Taboo Raider show, she’s joined by Australian comedian Yianni as he asks, Why Did The Chicken Cross The Line? Canadian comic Tony Law brings his oddball Frillermorphosis work in progress show to The Stand on Tuesday 30th June, with support from We Are Klang weirdo (in the nicest possible way) Steve Hall.

July’s shows see Mary Bourke offer up her guide to life, love and hip-hop, alongside Tobias Persson’s Drivel Rights Movement, as he reduces human struggle to soundbites and world events to hashtags on Sunday 5th July.

The Stand’s Fringe Preview Shows take place from Tuesday 9th June until Sunday 5th July.
