Reliably informed

Over the last few months, Cobalt’s semi-regular FRESH nights have seen an eclectic and appealing range of talent, ranging from local talent to touring international acts, hit the venue for a mid-week night that combines exciting new music with fresh cuisine (see what they did there?) from the venue’s kitchen.

The latest FRESH night, taking place on Thursday 4th October, sees two of the most interesting local electronic artists currently on the scene taking to the stage. Having built a firm fanbase on the back of appearances with Parastatic, Nano Kino and at this year’s Northern Electric Festival, Late Girl combines electroacoustic experimentation, lo-fi melodies, poetic polemics and a sly sense of humour to craft an intelligent and distinctly modern form of experimental pop.

Also pushing at the boundaries of pop music (whilst retaining a deep respect and command of the form) is the evening’s other performer, Competition. Pop doctor Craig Pollard has been part of several interesting and compelling bands, but his solo work as Competition stands out. Employing an ultra-minimal set-up, his work is sweetly melodic and powerfully empathetic, yet also radically questions and manipulates established song forms.

Combine these two performances with a homemade meal in one of the area’s most exciting, bold venues for just £5 in advance, and this is one major bargain.
