West Yorkshire-based singer Fran Smith has had something of an astronomical rise to fame since gradating from Newcastle University in 2008. Luckily, she’s done it all with bags of talent and class. Fran’s piano playing skill and dark, baroque melodies have captivated audiences across the world and earned her comparisons to Florence Welch and Antony Hegarty.

Her gorgeous songs have meant that she’s toured with everyone from indie-poppers Athlete, to legendary punk poet John Coper Clarke and Martha Wainwright, who invited Fran to stay at her house in Brooklyn and record with producer-husband Brad Albetta. The BBC even named her Live Music Highlight of the Year in 2014. Not bad for someone who only released their debut EP two years ago.

She’s now returning to The Cumberland Arms for the first time in five years, where she used to promote monthly acoustic gigs by other fledgling songwriters. Fran herself says: “It is so exciting to be playing at The Cumberland again, my old stomping ground. I think of the North East as my home-from-home, and I always love performing here because the audiences are so warm and enthusiastic. They really care about supporting live music, and they’ve watched me grow up!”

Fran is joined at the Cumberland Arms by sensitive folk singer-songwriter Mat Hunsley and rising pop songstress Jenny Lascelles, who has just released her debut album.

Fran Smith comes to The Cumberland Arms on Tuesday 30th June.
