MIMA’s summer exhibition will look at how art can respond to the problems facing our climate. Fragile Earth: seeds, weeds, plastic crust – which is at the Middlesbrough gallery from Friday 28th June-Sunday 29th September – will display artistic responses to the urgencies around ecological change.

You may be shocked to learn that the regional emissions per person in the Tees Valley are almost three times the national average; with this exhibition MIMA will explore elements of sustainability, and the ecological after effects of the region’s industrial, manufacturing and engineering heritage, in the context of how artists are able to help visualise the scale of the problem and provide solutions that can affect industrial, commercial and governmental behaviour.

What’s vital about this exhibition is its legacy and the goals it’s hoping to achieve; here, artists aren’t making structures to be peered at in a museum, they’re actively engaging with the local community to inform and provide long-lasting benefits. Wayward, a collective of designers, artists and urban growers, will design a portable garden able to be used across the Tees Valley; London duo Cooking Sections study the area’s exploitation of natural resources; while Cape Town-based artist Donna Kukama works alongside local communities to gather stories about migration that find form in a library of plants. Local artist Laura Harrington, in a co-commission with Tyneside Cinema, explores the River Tees back to its source; and the coalescence of the industrial and agricultural landscapes in the Niger Delta comes under sharp focus in work by Zina Saro-Wiwa’s installations.

MIMA’s director Laura Sillars states: “Our environment and its future represent the single biggest issue of our time. Contributing to this conversation is a key concern for MIMA.”
