January is always a great time for Hollywood movies; with the Oscars fast approaching, Britain always gets its fair share of exceptional American films tackling a variety of subjects. Of course, the Oscars love a good true story and Foxcatcher, which comes to the Tyneside Cinema from Friday 9th January, continues a tradition of epic sports biopics.

Channing Tatum plays Mark Schultz, an Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler who finds a way to step out of the shadow of his celebrated brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo). He is summoned by multi-millionaire John du Pont (Steve Carrell) who moves his estate and gets Schultz to train for the Seoul Olympics. However, du Pont leads Schultz down a dark path that eventually leads to tragedy.

Directed by Bennett Miller – who previously worked on the equally epic Moneyball – looks at the pitfalls of the American Dream, while the three central performances show sides to Tatum, Ruffalo and Carrell never seen before.

Foxcatcher screens at the Tyneside Cinema from Friday 9th January.
