Fela Kuti – often known simply as Fela – was perhaps the most influential figure in the emergence of Afrobeat music. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, human rights activist and political maverick, Fela’s life and times is documented in Alex Gibney’s latest film Finding Fela, which comes to the Tyneside Cinema on Monday 12th January.

Gibney’s film is a perfect introduction to Kuti himself; it’s a rather unflashy and straightforward documentary that aims to educate its audience about its subject and his works, rather than concentrating on being overly stylised. Gibney (who also directed The Armstrong Lie and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks), creates a rather hard-hitting look at Fela’s life, which takes a straight look not only at his music but also his political leanings (Kuti promoted bringing Pan Africanist politics to the world) and his fight to bring democracy to his home country of Nigeria. Anyone with even a slight interest in world music, Afrobeat or even politics would no doubt benefit from seeing Gibney’s latest documentary.

Finding Fela comes to the Tyneside Cinema from Monday 12th January.
