A cluster of Kermodes, a number of Normans, a Winklemanswarm…whatever the collective term for film reviewers is, they are turning out in force for the region’s fastest growing festival of film!

The creative minds behind Sunderland Shorts Film Festival began the process of recruiting and training the initial batch of 20 film reviewers in the art of how to review.

With plans for the fourth short film festival well underway, the team welcomed the first group of would-be reviewers to Sunderland Software Centre, as they honed their collective film reviewing skills.

Hannah Matterson, Volunteer Manager for the film festival, said: “This year, the aim is to recruit 20 enthusiastic reviewers quickly and make sure they are fair-handed, unbiased and most importantly in love with movie making.

“This year’s reviewers will play such an integral role in the film festival, so it’s important that they understand exactly how they will contribute to the process.

“Of course, each volunteer has their own perspective on what makes a good short film, but the training ensures that each reviewer approaches the collection of films with the same critical eye.”

Sunderland Shorts has already received submissions from filmmakers all over the world, but is aiming for far more, and organisers are keen for more films from the North East.

Sunderland Shorts is a three-day annual film festival that supports and encourages local filmmakers, as well as international filmmaking talent. In 2018 it will take place between the 3rd and 6th May and will screen around 50 films from around the world .

Anne Tye, Festival Director, said: “The film festival shines a spotlight on Sunderland, and we are once again looking forward to welcoming creative talent into our city. The festival has blossomed since 2015, and we are already excited for the collection of incoming submissions which will once again provide great entertainment at Sunderland Shorts. The key to keeping our quality really high starts with the work of our reviewers and we will welcome anyone who would like to help us by giving their views on some amazing films.”
