Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art is set to present two films from the Portuguese artist Catarina Simão’s Mozambique Archive series. The screenings will be followed by a discussion between Simão and Senior Curator Miguel Amado, with this all taking place on Thursday 24th November.
As part of Northern Film & Media’s Film Club, the two films on show are 2013’a Mueda 1979, which analyses a sequence from the 1979 film Mueda, Memória e Massacre. Based on a play which re-enacted the events of a massacre of 600 people in Mueda, Mozambique, by Portuguese colonial forces in 1960, Simão uses the piece to question trust in the retelling of stories. Effects of Wording (2014) is the second film, documenting The Mozambique Institute, an education project which existed during the country’s armed struggle for liberation from colonial control. Both films are critical watches from an artist with purpose, and MIMA have done well to draw both together with a discussion to follow.
