Those who missed Field Music’s commission for Berwick Film & Media Art Festival back in 2013 to produce a soundtrack for seminal silent documentary Drifters by John Grierson, will be pleased to hear that the band’s work is getting a proper physical release for Record Store Day. The silver vinyl release, entitled Music For Drifters, is the first completely instrumental recording the Sunderland band have produced, and they’ll also be back on the road to help promote it, playing a handful of cinema and art spaces around the UK, beginning at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema on Friday 24th April.

The film itself follows the working day of a herring fishing fleet as they set sail from the Shetland Islands to battle the elements of the North Sea fishing grounds; John Grierson’s film was a ground breaking piece of work when it was released in 1929, and Grierson himself is widely known for coining the term ‘documentary’. A prolific and highly regarded filmmaker, he was responsible for the production of over 1,000 films and television programmes. Set to the band’s stunning score, the live performances promise to be as moving and inspirational as Grierson’s work.

Field Music release Music For Drifters for Record Store Day on 18th April. The band perform a live accompaniment to the screening at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Friday 24th April.
