Orpheus was a legendary musician, poet and prophet in ancient Greek myth. Stories about him centre on his ability to use his music to charm all living and inanimate objects and in particular his attempt to retrieve his wife from the underworld. Orpheus is a popular figure within modern culture and bands including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Arcade Fire have offered their own interpretation of the myth. Martin Bonger brings his version of Orpheus in the comedy show Fat Man to the Live Theatre on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March.

Fat Man is a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus in which he is portrayed as a musician and comic, Bonger recounts the tragic tale in the style of a stand-up routine. He refers to the audience as though they too are Gods of Greek legend and Fat Man’s clever and current incarnation makes the myth of Orpheus accessible to a modern audience. Whilst some jokes might rely on a vague knowledge of Greek myth to make you laugh out loud, an in depth understanding is not necessary to appreciate and enjoy this witty show.

Bonger’s Orpheus explores the emotional torture that comes when dealing with grief and guilt at what we did or didn’t say to the ones we love that we’ve lost. This show has the potential to be both intriguing as well as funny with some unexpected emotional parts. Fat Man promises plenty of laughs with maybe even a few tears.

Fat Man comes to the Live Theatre, Newcastle on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March.
