Reliably informed

It seems that certain artists are never out of the imagination of the public, and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is definitely one of this select group. With a life as colourful as hers (which included ill health and disability, tempestuous relationships and blinding talent often overshadowed by her overpowering husband) it makes sense that the drama of it would make a great backdrop for a play. In Falling In Love With Frida, performed at Newcastle’s Dance City on Thursday 15th October, Glasgow-based performance artist and choreographer Caroline Bowditch has written a script merging spoken word, dance and visual arts that doesn’t hold back, giving the audience an insight into Kahlo’s short life (she died at 47), sharing little known facts and forcing us to look at how other people are viewed in society and how much we can control others’ memories of us. Winner of the prestigious Herald Angel Award at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, expect themes of an adult nature, sexual references, plenty of swearing and even a shot of tequila to get into the Mexican spirit.

Falling in Love with Frida is at Dance City, Newcastle on Thursday 15th October.
