The position and relationship between a host and their guests is the launching pad for EXHIBITION, a group show curated by CIRCA Projects at Workplace Gallery, Gateshead, running from Friday 9th January.

A group of diverse and talented artists will be having their work showcased, amongst them Matthew Crawley, Keith Farquhar, Josephine Flynn, Susie Green and Cara Tolmie. All of their pieces, in one way or another, are a dissection of the conventions of the typical art gallery situation – a fundamentally surreal scenario when you stop to think about it.

Preceding all of this will be It’s Moving From I to It, a new 45 minute play written and directed by artist Tim Etchells, which will be performed at the Gallery on Friday 9th ahead of the exhibition launch. The piece, featuring two actors, carries the same self-awareness of the bizarre art gallery set-up, reimagining the host as an artist and the guests as the eager culture vultures who drop in to view their work. Meta? You betcha.

EXHIBITION runs at the Workplace Gallery, Gateshead from Friday 9th January.
