Despite only playing at live venues since 2010, troubadour Ewan McLennan has risen to become one of the best and most recognizable names on the UK folk scene. His first album Rags & Robes gained immense critical acclaim and secured his position as a folk guitarist at the forefront of the genre. Now, five years down the line, he’s appearing at the Sage Gatehsead as part of their Folkworks series.

Despite having not released an album for two years, McLennan’s debut and his sophomore effort, The Last Bird To Sing, have stood the test of time as two of the best folk records of recent years. His lyrics are imbued with biting social commentary and contain the political edge sometimes lost in modern folk, while his expert guitar paying has seen him recently collaborating with legends such as Tim O’Brien, Cara Dillon and Mike McGoldrick.

Expect renditions of his old classics, including the award-winning Joe Glenton, as well as the potential airing of some brand new tunes.

Ewan McLennan plays at the Sage Gateshead on Sunday 15th February.
