American folk rocker Elvis Perkins released his third album earlier this year, and he’s followed that with an inevitable tour, which is to take in dates throughout America and Europe. Somewhere in the middle of these tour dates, he’s set to bring his unique brand of song writing to Newcastle on Friday 20th November, with Cluny 2 playing host to one of just five UK dates on the European leg of his tour.

With new album I Aubade now familiar with fans, there’s a collection of new songs to be given a live airing, and with the tracks coming from a very intimate album, Cluny 2 is a perfect venue to showcase these songs. The new album is a departure from his previous efforts, there’s something raw throughout, as evidenced on Hogus Pocus, which has a lovely country tinge with straight forward guitar playing and emotive, delicate vocals at the foreground as he allows an undercurrent of something strange to shine through. I Came For Fire shows this perfectly, a thudding bass line at times masking a vulnerable vocal, then allowing it to take centre stage again. How he carries these songs over live will be a fascinating challenge for this experienced song writer.

After recording his most recent album without a producer or a band, expect an engaging live performance, as Elvis Perkins gets to grips with songs in a setting quite alien to the one they were recorded in. He once referred to playing his songs live as confronting old versions of himself, so there’ll be an interesting dynamic happening on stage, as he plays his way through folksy numbers with a beguiling charm.
